How many times should i keep calling in?

I turned in my application for my first job, and the next day i called to check on the status of it. They manager told me that they have a position for me but not today and to call back wednesday. After i called back wednesday he told me to call him friday and that he might have an opening for me. What does this mean? And how long should i keep this up? I really need a job.
